Stay Protected with Vaccinations from Josefina F. Tur, M.D. P.A.
At the office of Josefina F. Tur, M.D. P.A., we believe in the importance of being protected against preventable diseases—and the most accurate way to know if you’re truly protected is through blood testing. Unfortunately, not all vaccinations have available titer tests. For example, there is no titer for Polio or Tuberculosis (TB). Protection for these is confirmed through vaccination records or TB screening, not antibody testing.
Whether you’ve been vaccinated or previously exposed to a disease, blood work can tell you more than records or memory alone. Some people receive vaccines but never build full immunity. Others assume they need a vaccine when, in fact, they already have strong immune protection. And some believe they’re fully covered, only to discover through testing that they are not.
A simple blood test—known as a titer—measures your level of antibodies and shows whether you are immune. It’s the most reliable first step in determining your actual immunity status and deciding whether vaccination is necessary.
In addition to titer testing, we offer QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G), a blood test used to screen for tuberculosis (TB) exposure, often required for healthcare, immigration, or school clearance.
We also provide a full range of adult vaccinations—including MMR, Tdap, Hepatitis A and B, Varicella, Shingles, Pneumococcal, and more—based on your age, health history, and risk factors.
Immunity (Titer) Tests We Offer
We provide titer tests for the following diseases to determine if your immune system has developed lasting protection:
• MMR Panel (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
• Varicella (Chickenpox)
• Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (HBsAb)
• Hepatitis A IgG Antibody
• Tetanus Antitoxin IgG
• Diphtheria Antitoxin IgG
• Pertussis IgG (when applicable)
• COVID-19 Spike Protein IgG (for personal information only)
Note: There is no clinically accepted titer test for Polio or Tuberculosis (TB). Proof of protection for those conditions is based on vaccination records or specific screening tests, not antibodies.
QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) Testing
We also offer QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G), a modern blood test used to screen for latent or active tuberculosis infection.
Unlike titer tests, QFT-G does not measure immunity. Instead, it detects whether your immune system has ever been exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that cause TB. It’s a preferred method for:
• Healthcare workers
• School and university students
• Immigration or visa applications
• Employment clearance in high-risk settings
QFT-G is a fast, accurate alternative to the traditional TB skin test (PPD), and results are typically available without requiring a return visit.

Why Some Individuals Choose Blood Testing First — and Why Others Don’t
Many individuals choose to start with blood testing to determine whether they’re already immune—especially when they want to avoid unnecessary vaccinations, are missing documentation, or need proof of immunity for school, work, or travel.
Benefits of Getting Blood Tested First:
• Avoid unnecessary vaccines if you’re already immune
• Provide proof of immunity to institutions that accept titer results
• Identify gaps in protection you may not be aware of
• Support exemption requests or reduce vaccine-related side effects
• Personalize your care based on your health history and needs
However, this approach may not be right for everyone.
Why Others Skip Blood Testing:
• Some schools, employers, or agencies do not accept titers and require vaccine documentation only
• Blood testing can be an added cost, especially if paying out of pocket
• Vaccination may be quicker and more widely accepted when deadlines are tight or rules are strict
At our clinic, we help each person understand their options and make the best decision based on their needs, goals, and any institutional requirements they may need to meet.
Vaccinations help your immune system recognize and fight off bacteria and viruses without causing illness. They train your body to produce antibodies so you’re protected if exposed later. Getting vaccinated protects you and safeguards vulnerable people who can’t get certain vaccines, like newborns or those with weak immune systems.
Vaccines train your immune system to recognize and fight germs without causing illness by exposing it to harmless antigens (weakened or inactive forms, or pieces of pathogens).
How vaccines work:
• Antigens: Harmless parts of germs trigger an immune response.
• Immune Response: Your body makes antibodies.
• Memory Cells: Your immune system “remembers” the germ.
• Future Protection: Your body reacts quickly when exposed later.
Vaccines are safe ways to build immunity and prevent disease spread in your community.
Vaccination needs depend on age, health, lifestyle, job, and travel plans.
• Adults: Annual flu shot; tetanus/diphtheria boosters every 10 years.
• Special cases: Hepatitis or travel vaccines for those with specific risks.
Dr. Tur’s team stays updated with CDC guidelines and offers personalized vaccine counseling.
Vaccinations protect individuals and the community.
Recommended vaccines:
• Tetanus & Diphtheria (Td/Tdap) boosters
• Annual Influenza
• MMR & Varicella catch-up vaccines
• Pneumococcal & Shingles for older adults
Children and teens also receive HPV and meningococcal vaccines.
Each patient’s plan is individualized based on history, travel, and health risks.
